In 2018, in Italy we celebrate the 50th anniversary of 1968, a fragment of a time suspended in history and in the collective imagination, also symbol of transformations in the society, politics, customs, and art. During the Sixties, the Italian cinema has produced legendary masterpieces, especially movies characterized by avant-garde leaps and atmospheres inspired by contemporary art. Indeed, never like in that period, the Italian directors, with the directors of photography, the set and costume designers, influenced by the visual arts, and particularly by the optical art movement and by the design, have been able to represent the reality in a revolutionary, often controversial, sometimes ironic and bizarre way, creating movie sets aesthetically original for elegance and extravagance. It is with this spirit that the Italian Pavillion celebrates those formidable years during which the dialogue between contemporary art and cinema proved the extraordinary dynamism of the Italian culture.
